Baylor Basketball A few months after Baylor football exceeded preseason expectations, Scott Drew and Nicki Collen’s basketball teams saw their seasons come to a frustrating end. I’m not the basketball guru of our SicEm365 team, so I will withhold from you my amateur analysis of where these teams went wrong, but it’s fair to call these two teams disappointing for different reasons.

The NCAA has granted Baylor wide receiver Ashtyn Hawkins an extra season of eligibility, SicEm365 has learned through sources. Before transferring to Baylor last offseason, Hawkins starred at Texas State for three seasons and played at Cisco Community College in 2020. He will be entering his sixth collegiate season this fall. Hawkins was a reliable target for quarterback Sawyer Robertson all season and was second on the team in receptions (45), receiving yards (567) and touchdowns (5).

Baylor football is expected to hire TCU's Paul Gonzales as its new cornerbacks coach, SicEm365 has learned. Gonzales will also hold the passing game coordinator title. Gonzales has coached TCU's safeties since 2018 after serving as the Horned Frogs cornerbacks coach the previous three seasons from 2015-2017. In his time coaching safeties at TCU, Gonzales mentored six eventual NFL players.

A few days ago, I was ardent for the opportunity to write an op-ed titled “Bowl Eligible Bears Back On Track Under Dave Aranda,” filled with disclaimers of how I believed the corner had been turned with the program. After a few days of mulling it over, I realized that writing about the subject felt disingenuous. Through the first six games of 2024, it was obvious that the talent level was different from that of 2023 and, to a lesser degree, from that of 2022.

Head coach Dave Aranda has paid for former Baylor football players who played on the Bears’ 2013 and 2014 Big 12 Championship teams to have access to McLane Stadium’s brand new end zone suites for Saturday’s home contest against TCU, sources tell SicEm365. One source confirmed that Aranda is fully covering the costs for all players who attend “out of his own pocket.” Baylor is set to officially honor the back-to-back Big 12 Championship teams during the game Saturday.
