A pair of the Treasure State’s favorite sons were among the three players drafted out of the Big Sky Conference on Saturday. Tommy Mellott, last season’s Walter Payton Award winner as the FCS national Offensive Player of the Year at Montana State, went in the sixth round, 213th overall, to the Las Vegas Raiders. The Butte native was a four-year starter at Montana State, leading the Bobcats to two Big Sky championships and two appearances in the FCS national title game.

BOZEMAN – Montana State’s final scrimmage of the spring – The Sonny Holland Classic – didn’t have any players jump off the page like has happened so often over the years. But that doesn’t mean the Bobcats didn’t show off any new wrinkles or that a few developments didn’t occur. MSU lost a number of players to graduation and the transfer portal following last year’s Big Sky Conference championship season that ended with MSU’s lone loss coming in the national championship game.

If Saturday afternoon’s 105 plays during the Sonny Holland Spring Classic to wrap spring football at Montana State was any indication, everything is going to be just fine. Saturday’s showcase affirmed MSU still has offensive and defensive linemen in spades.

(April 24, 2024) – Senior Paul Brott, an all-conference defensive tackle from Billings, was presented Montana State’s legacy No. 41 jersey by head coach Brent Vigen after practice on Thursday. Brott will wear No. 41, a tribute to Montana’s status as the 41st state admitted into the Union as well as the school’s 1941 football team, during the 2025 season.
