German immigrant Paul Wolf traveled 383 miles on a covered wagon from Wheeling, Ill. to what is now known as Nerstrand Big Woods State Park, where he built the woods' first log cabin out of sturdy white oak in 1855. A year later, the cabin was moved closer to East Prairie, the area now called Nerstrand, where it stood for almost 170 years - until last week.
