Ulster Bank is on track to return its banking licence in the Republic in the coming months after 165 years in the market, following the transfer of unclaimed customer deposits to a trust, according to sources. The bank, a unit of NatWest Group, may hand back the licence to the Central Bank of Ireland as early as next month, though the timing could drift into the third quarter, the sources said. The State-owned Ireland Strategic Investment Fund (ISIF) is pledging more than €160 million to green technology businesses as it plans to double its support for climate action enterprises to €2 billion. The fund, which operates under the umbrella of the National Treasury Management Agency, aims to back the State’s climate goals by investing in projects that cut greenhouse gas emissions, boost renewable energy and capture carbon from the atmosphere. Average Irish mortgage drawdowns hit a record of almost €328,000 in the first three months of the year, according to figures from the banking industry, as borrowers took on more debt as home prices continued to soar amid a shortage of properties for sale. This was driven by a 9.6 per cent annual rise in loans on second hand properties, to €370,790, according to Banking & Payments Federation Ireland’s (BPFI) latest quarterly mortgage drawdowns report, which draws on data going back to 2005.

Profit at LinkedIn’s Irish business surged to $427 million (€376 million) as the company added more members and increased its advertising business. The Irish subsidiary, LinkedIn Ireland Unlimited Company, recorded turnover of $8.9 billion for the 18 months to June 30th 2024. Cost of sales for the period was $5.7 billion. The professional networking site has changed its reporting period to bring it in line with that of parent company Microsoft in Ireland.
