The first and only time Ethel Kennedy called me, I almost hung up on her. It was April 1, 2003, and I was sitting at my desk in the Plain Dealer newsroom when my landline rang. I answered with my usual greeting: “This is Connie Schultz at the Plain Dealer.”“Connie,” the woman’s voice replied. “This is Ethel Kennedy.”Sure you are, honey. It was April Fool’s Day. Typical newsroom prank, I figured. “Well, hell-oooww, Ethel,” I said, imitating her voice. “How’s Hickory Hill?”She laughed.

Sept. 6 was our first time I saw a concert at Schiferl’s WJ Ranch and what a great show it was with Jimmy Fortune and his band! It was a night we will never forget. We loved it there. Thank you to the ranch and sponsors for bringing such great entertainment to Northeast Nebraska in such a wonderful venue. We see the ranch has had a long list of entertainers. We can’t wait to come back!

The wise words belong to John O’Donohue. The plaque hangs in our home, except when I brought it outside to photograph it for you. Last week, I walked into the kitchen to find my husband standing at the window with his hands on his hips. “Look at him,” Sherrod said, nodding toward his vegetable garden in the corner of our backyard. A large groundhog was standing on his hind legs next to the row of peppers, basking in the glow of the setting sun.
