    An American pastor abducted by armed men in South Africa has been rescued - and was "miraculously unharmed" in a deadly shootout. Josh Sullivan, who is originally from Tennessee, was kidnapped by four men as he was delivering a sermon to a church congregation in Eastern Cape province last Thursday. The gang stole two mobile phones from worshippers, seized Mr Sullivan from the pulpit, and drove the pastor away using his own pick-up truck.

    Peru's former president Ollanta Humala has been sentenced to 15 years in jail for money laundering. His wife Nadine Heredia received the same punishment, but she has been granted asylum after entering the Brazilian embassy in Lima. The couple were found guilty of receiving $3m (£2.3m) in illegal contributions from a Brazilian construction firm called Odebrecht. That cash was used to finance Humala's presidential campaigns in 2006 and 2011, with his lawyer describing the sentence as "excessive".

    A colossal squid has been filmed in its natural environment for the first time - exactly 100 years after the species was first identified. The footage was recorded in March by a team of international scientists on an expedition searching for new marine life. Measuring just 30cm long, the juvenile squid was spotted at a depth of 600m (1,968ft) near the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean.
