The failed “modernisation” of the Constitution may not be a one-off failure for Irish liberals Ireland went to the polls last Friday to vote on a slate of Constitutional amendments that sought to modernise the document, including revising the meaning of family and removing references to women’s importance in domestic life. The polls had been predicting a comfortable victory, but the stench of death began to surround the campaign during the last few weeks.

A couple of weeks ago, the Wolfe Tones headlined Electric Picnic to a rapturous reception. Electric Picnic is a music festival, the local Irish equivalent of a Coachella or a Glastonbury, with the equivalent type of attendee. (These things are all relative.)The Tones have been going since the 60s and are, per Wikipedia, “an Irish rebel music band that incorporate Irish traditional music in their songs”.

Reaction to my Washington Post essay “Men are lost. Here’s a map out of the wilderness” (gift link!) has been overwhelming and, to my delight, generally positive. It’s also given me entirely new questions to think about. Perhaps the most consistent negative response to the essay has been a rejection of the idea that there might be value in putting forth any sort of “ideal” of manhood or masculinity.

I’m going to try and answer this intriguing question from Twitter user youngvulgarian, who posted it last week. The ostensible reason for her tweet was this clip of Caitlin Moran that circulated on Twitter a little while ago, speaking about a book she’s written about men, boys, masculinity, men’s mental health etc. Loads of people had a good ol’ dunk on it including me. This prominent long read on the same subject appeared in my feed not long before I pressed “post” on this article.

Top Irish twitter poster PangurBn10 has been working his way through the books of Irish writer Desmond Fennell and tweeted out this gem recently:Fennell is what would now be called a heterodox thinker. He spent his life swimming against the cultural tide in various ways and critiquing whatever the standard beliefs of Irish liberals at the time. This extract is from his book “Nice People and Rednecks: Ireland in the ‘80s”.

About a week ago Irish YouTuber Keith Woods tweeted a highlighted passage from the proposed Hate Crime legislation that was then working it’s way through the Dáil. He called out some unusually draconion provions in the law, which appeared to suggest that a person could be covincted simply for having something that violated the law without disseminating it; and that there would be no presumption of innocence in such cases.
