Garda detectives are to travel to Iceland next week to interview dozens of people about the disappearance and potential murder of Jón Jónsson, who disappeared in Dublin five years ago. Mr Jónsson went missing after visiting from Iceland with his partner to play in a poker tournament. His family believes he may have been murdered by a paid hitman in a case of mistaken identity. One line of investigation is the hitman intended to target a different Icelandic man visiting Ireland at the time.

The State is to purchase the Citywest Hotel in Dublin for more than €148 million with the intention of making it a permanent processing centre for International Protection applicants. Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan said he received approval at Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting for the move, which forms part of a plan to provide 14,000 State-owned beds for asylum seekers by 2028 rather than relying on private providers. The 764-bed hotel and conference centre has been leased by the State since 2020.

Tom and Molly Martens, the North Carolina father and daughter jailed for the killing of Limerick man Jason Corbett, have completed their parole. Records from the North Carolina Department of Corrections show the pair’s one-year parole period was officially terminated on June 6th. During that time, Tom Martens (75), a former FBI agent, and his daughter Molly (41) were subject to strict conditions, including where they could live and travel.
