As the Edmonton Oilers make the Stanley Cup Final, Corey Perry will be in his fourth final in five years. He will try to win his second Cup. At the age of 40, Perry is one of the few remaining members of the illustrious 2003 NHL draft class. He’s achieved everything in hockey. Perry won the Stanley Cup in 2007 with the Anaheim Ducks. He won the Hart Trophy as League MVP in 2010-11. He won the Rocket Richard Trophy in 2010-11 as the top goalscorer in the NHL. That’s a decorated career.

The Edmonton Oilers’ defence has improved drastically in this postseason. They’ve begun defending like a Stanley Cup contender. All this in the absence of their best defensive defenseman, Mattias Ekholm, who is still sidelined. However, they’ve been wonderful overall. While the bad moments, like Game one, have been there, Edmonton’s improved defense is why they’re ahead in Round 3 against the Dallas Stars. They’ve been much better than the struggles we saw against the Los Angeles Kings.

Starting from 1993, we can follow a single trade tree and figure out why the Whalers failed to succeed in Connecticut and why the Hurricanes won the Cup in 2006. It all starts with a young kid from Dryden, Ontario. It all starts with Chris Pronger.
