My staff are off to pressgang another 100000 troops into action. Big welcome today for foreign fighters. All in all, a worthy day. Gives my life meaning. By the way, they attacked me first.

It lasts 40 days according to its biblical history, and is adhered to by many Christian faithful who follow its liturgical principles.

I have difficulty reconciling my mind to the whole idea of “basic human rights”, (BHR) as distinguished from “customer rights”. BHR are costly and accordingly must be paid for, so consequently we all pick up the bill. There are very few rights that are free. In reality therefore, we are in this context, paying customers, and as such, we harbour expectations that, if not met, dissatisfaction and anger ensue.

“The foolish mouth.” On considering this unusual title, I reflected on that orifice which has the awesome power to make or break a person on many levels. Consider for a moment what so many of us fill our “gobs” with, which we do as if force-feeding a goose. Items masquerading as food are stuffed in with gay abandon in order to satiate the cravings of the gut, which incidentally is connected directly to the brain.

Many leaders of the world, past and present, have had trouble with the clergy — or is it vice versa? Firstly I refer to the utterances of King Henry II. He was frustrated with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket, who kept excommunicating bishops who supported him in his quest to wrest power from the Church in favour of himself. “Who will rid me of this turbulent priest,” he lamented. The rhetorical question resulted in some knights interpreting this as his desire for the death of Becket.

The physics of a flat-stone skipping over water, determines correctly that the momentum won’t last long. A bullet or even Kim Jong Un’s ballistic missiles eventually lose velocity and are “snaaied” by gravity and return to Earth. In short, this is kinetic energy which, by its nature, is finite. Certain things, however, when set in motion, defy the laws of gravity, velocity and energy.

Times are a-changin’. The United States arguably leads the thrust of change politically, and in every other way. The incoming Trumpian administration has unsurprisingly flexed its muscles early and with no small measure of arrogance, as it tests the waters. Controversial appointments are a great litmus test of public opinion and many of the new White House nominees indeed read “red” on the acid scale.

In 1904, an agreement was signed between France and the UK. This was known as the Entente Cordiale. You need not be too adept at French to understand the gist of the title. The “entente” at the time, was pretty “cordiale”. It was an agreement of co-operation between the two countries and, although not cast in stone, it did articulate a spirit of good neighbourliness. Over the years, especially given two world wars that occurred along the way, that agreement held strong.
