One of the men accused of felling the Sycamore Gap tree told police he did not "have the time to do a job like that for free", a court has been told. Daniel Graham, 39, and Adam Carruthers, 32, both from Cumbria, deny causing £622,191 in criminal damage to the tree and £1,144 worth to Hadrian's Wall, a Unesco world heritage site, on September 27-28, 2023.

Two friends who embarked on a "moronic mission" to fell the Sycamore Gap tree are now blaming each other for the "mindless vandalism", a court was told. Daniel Graham, 39, and Adam Carruthers, 32, are accused of using a chainsaw to cut down the historic tree late on September 27, 2023, keeping a wedge of the trunk as a "trophy". They are also charged with damaging part of Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland National Park in the process.
