    The Western Cape Minister of Finance, Deidré Baartman, is expected to table the 2025/26 Provincial Budget this morning. The budget will be tabled amid significant fiscal constraints, as national finances remain limited. The Provincial Government says its continued focus will be on driving economic growth and job creation, while at the same time safeguarding critical frontline services such as health, education and social services.

    The University of Cape Town (UCT) says it will be allocating around R1 billion this year, towards assisting students who are struggling to pay their fees. This as many students who were accepted to study at UCT are struggling to pay for tuition and accommodation. Funding from NSFAS for qualifying students is sometimes also not sufficient to cover the costs for studying at UCT. Student debt at UCT is a major issue that the institution has to deal with annually.

    Rampant crime and gangsterism were high on the agenda at the police imbizo in Atlantis on the Cape West Coast. Deputy Police Ministers Cassel Mathale and Polly Boshielo attended the crime prevention gathering. Police say the purpose of the engagement was to find lasting solutions for communities affected by gun and gang violence. Residents of Atlantis on the West Coast are appealing to the national Police Department to beef up resources at the local police station.

    Eskom’s proposed increase in electricity tariffs has been opposed by various stakeholders as well as members of the public. Nersa’s public hearings on Eskom’s proposed electricity tariff hike are under way in Cape Town. The hearings started today and will end tomorrow in the Mother City, before moving to other parts of South Africa. Eskom has applied to Nersa to approve a 36 percent electricity price hike from April next year.

    Energy and Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says natural gas is critical as a transitional energy source on Africa’s path towards a sustainable and decarbonised energy future. Ramokgopa was speaking at the Africa Energy Week, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. He says the global pipeline for gas trade is also rebounding this year, after contracting in 2022 due to geopolitical developments.
