Two really good girls soccer squads met in a rivalry contest Monday night on the turf at Columbia High School, with the home team ending up celebrating a narrow victory. The Eagles (9-2-1) hosted Monroe County foe Waterloo (5-3-1), winning 1-0 in a well-played match. Columbia got the only goal of the game on a score from Riley Mathews with 15 minutes left in the first half. Alaina Rains was credited with the assist.

The U.S. Postal Service announced last week it is filing for a large postage rate increase to be implemented July 13, 2025. Rates for periodicals are proposed to increase on average by 9.3 percent. If approved, this USPS rate increase would hike the cost of a first-class stamp from 73 cents to 78 cents. This action comes after the recent removal of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and before the Board of Governors has even named his successor.

A legendary local baseball coach celebrated yet another milestone of late as his team has strung together some impressive victories. Waterloo High School head baseball coach Mark Vogel, now in his final season at the helm of the Bulldogs, picked up career win No. 600 with 7-1 victory in game one of a Saturday doubleheader at home over Gibault. Vogel’s Bulldogs promptly gave him his 601st victory with a 5-0 win in game two. Waterloo pitching held Gibault to just four hits on the day.

Two rivals met on the softball diamond last week, and the result was a well-played contest. Waterloo (8-2) traveled north on Route 3 to face Columbia (7-2) last Wednesday, with both squads enjoying strong starts to the season. The result was a narrow 2-1 victory for the Eagles. With the score tied in the bottom of the seventh, a bases loaded fielder’s choice resulted in the winning run sliding just ahead of the throw home. Ava Brown had two hits for the Bulldogs.

Local high school track and field athletes have been putting their best feet and arms forward this spring, as evidenced in recent meets. On Monday, Columbia and Dupo tracksters competed in the Wiseman/Henning Invitational at Freeburg. For the Columbia boys, Chase Hendrickson won the discus with a throw of 150 feet, 7.5 inches. Joel Spirakis placed fifth in the pole vault at seven feet, three inches. For the Columbia girls, Alayna Calvin placed sixth in the long jump at 14 feet, 9.25 inches.
