RIB MOUNTAIN, Wis. (WAOW) – Phil Bickley celebrated his 55th anniversary at State Park Speedway on Saturday. To mark the milestone, several big-name racers were invited to attend. Racers like Mark Martin and Dave Marcus showed up to sign autographs. Bickley also offered up a combined $30,000 purse to that day’s winners. Bickley’s anniversary also marked the final day of racing at State Park Speedway. Following the last exhibition, fans were invited to walk around the track one last time.

RIB MOUNTAIN, Wis. (WAOW) – Volunteers and State Park workers have supported the track for several decades. They say they are sad to see it go. Marty Colip says he has been working at the track since the Wimmers first bought the track. He says he has done everything at the park. From cutting the grass to working the concession stand, Colip has done it all. When asked how he feels about the track’s closure, Colip said, “I don’t know what we are going to do.

RIB MOUNTAIN, Wis. (WAOW) — State Park Speedway has seen a lot of history over the years. It's unknown when racing truly started at the track. However, local historians say the first advertised races took place in 1953. In the early 1960’s the track was converted from dirt to asphalt. Later that decade the Bickley family would take over operations. Fans consider this era of Central Wisconsin Racing to be the golden years at State Park Speedway.

CENTRAL WISCONSIN (WAOW) — Tracks across our area are speaking out about the closure of State Park Speedway. Golden Sands Speedway has been in operation for nearly six decades. Cody and Shannon Smiley are in charge of operations there. They say the closure of State Park Speedway is sad. They say after the track’s final season, an important piece of the racing world would be lost. “The memories that we are going to lose with the track closing are immense.
