The start of summer 2024 brought an influx of new music, movies and television shows. Junior Aaryan Sharma especially enjoyed listening to the new Sabrina Carpenter album “Short n’ Sweet.” To him, the songs point to a re-emergence of bubblegum pop music — pop songs with catchy choruses — and he loves the happier feeling these songs evoke. However, his parents do not share the same enthusiasm for summertime music.

Freshman Allie Rummelhoff’s rookie basketball season ended with a bang two weeks after the season had originally been expected to end. She was grateful for the extra time with her close-knit team, a result of a successful playoff series and a CCS championship win. Yet with extra time spent on the basketball court, she missed the first two weeks of track and field season, which was already well underway.

San Francisco is one of the biggest cities in the US, inhabited by over 800,000 people and visited by over 20 million each year. Inspired by Krish Dev’s 2022 story and with a day off school, we went around the city and interviewed five of those people to learn more about their experiences in San Francisco and the life lessons they have learned along the way.

Literature teacher Jessica Kaufman recalls watching the first “Ghostbusters,” which was released in 1984, with her dad as a kid. A few years ago, Kaufman saw a rebooted version of her childhood movie “Ghostbusters,” one of the many adaptations, reboots and remakes that she has recently seen on screen.

When assigned to discuss his favorite childhood book in his literature class, senior Mihir Sharma knew exactly what his decision would be. From the first time he discovered “Charlotte’s Web” by E. B. White at nine years old, he felt an immediate connection to the book and has reread it numerous times. “Charlotte’s Web” is the story of an unlikely friendship between a pig named Wilbur and a spider named Charlotte who both live on a farm.

Bustling around the kitchen on Thanksgiving, junior Jooha Kim helps her friends plate food for their Friendsgiving celebration. The air is full of excitement as she and her six closest friends open cupboards and pass around food and plates, eager to devour the delicious food they bought and prepared together. Then they sit for the meal, their hard work from the evening culminating in their Friendsgiving dinner. “We really created a situation for friendliness and having a meal,” Kim said.

With the contract for the turf fields of both Fremont High School and Homestead High School reaching its termination in 2024, FUHSD is deciding whether to keep the turf sports fields or bring back natural grass fields. The fields across the district were all natural grass up to 2008. Superintendent Graham Clark, who served as HHS’s principal from 2004 to 2013, notes that there were many maintenance and water issues.
