Carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from fossil fuels continue to increase, year on year. This sobering reality will be presented to world leaders today at the international climate conference COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Our latest annual stocktake shows the world is on track to reach a new record: 37.4 billion tonnes of CO₂ emitted from fossil fuels in 2024. This is an increase of 0.8% from the previous year. Adopting renewable energy and electric vehicles is helping reduce emissions in 22 countries.

AbstractThe growing number of scientific publications on climate change has outstripped the capacity of individuals to keep up with the literature, even when confined to selected sub-topics such as chapter sections of IPCC reports. The IPCC would benefit from the assistance of modern technology, the engagement and insights of a far larger pool of experts, and more frequent updates.

As the end of the year approaches, now is a good time to reflect on an important climate policy in the UK that will drive progress to reduce emissions and deliver wider co-benefits. This has been on the introduction, in September this year, of the zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate. In my role as a member of the Climate Change Committee we welcomed the confirmation of the ZEV mandate.

Emisi karbon dioksida (CO2) global dari bahan bakar fosil terus meningkat dengan angka kenaikan pada 2023 sebesar 1,1%. Emisi tersebut mencetak rekor, dengan torehannya sebesar 36,8 miliar ton. Angka ini adalah temuan dari laporan tahunan bujet karbon ke-18 dari Global Carbon Project yang kami rilis 5 Desember lalu. Emisi fosil CO2 berasal dari pembakaran dan penggunaan bahan bakar fosil (batu bara, minyak, dan gas bumi) serta produksi semen.

Les émissions mondiales de dioxyde de carbone (CO2) d’origine fossile augmenteront de 1,1 % en 2023, les portant au niveau record de 36,8 milliards de tonnes de CO2. C’est la conclusion du 18e rapport annuel du Global Carbon Project sur l’état du budget carbone mondial, que nous avons publié aujourd’hui. Le CO2 d’origine fossile comprend les émissions provenant de la combustion et de l’utilisation des énergies fossiles (charbon, pétrole et gaz) et de la production de ciment.
