The Dáil’s public spending watchdog is to examine errors in pension payments for civil servants and ministers. It has agreed to issue an invitation to the national office at the centre of the controversy to be quizzed by TDs.The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) wants representatives of the National Shared Services Office (NSSO) to face questions on the matter as early as next month.

Protections for tenants who live outside Rent Pressure Zones (RPZs) could be extended to the entire country within weeksIt is understood that Minister for Housing James Browne will bring forward legislation to make the country a ‘national rent pressure zone’. Tánaiste Simon Harris confirmed in the Dáil on Thursday morning the legislation would be brought forward next week.

Between 85,000 and 100,000 homes per year need to be built to address Ireland’s housing deficit and additional needs by 2030, TDs and Senators have been told. The estimate was provided to the Oireachtas Committee on Housing by Trinity College Dublin professor Ronan Lyons who was a member of the Housing Commission, which was established by the previous government. That commission’s report on a wide range of housing issues was published in May 2024.

Ireland will support a proposal to extend European Union protection for people fleeing the war in Ukraine for another year into 2027 when EU justice and home affairs ministers meet later this week. Ukrainians arriving in EU countries since the Russian invasion in 2022 have benefited from temporary protection. More than 112,000 people from Ukraine have arrived in Ireland over those three years, though almost a third of these are believed to have since left the State.
