    Meta warned the Government that the “operating environment” for tech companies in the European Union is “unsustainable” and called for “urgent action” by Ireland, newly released records show. The tech giant’s chief global affairs officer Joel Kaplan made the remarks in a recent letter to Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe. Mr Kaplan, a prominent US Republican, took up his new role at Meta in January, replacing former British deputy prime minister Nick Clegg.

    Fine Gael MEPs have urged Minister for Media Patrick O’Donovan to meet an organisation pushing for a levy on streaming services like Netflix, telling him “Irish content doesn’t grow on trees”. Screen Producers Ireland (SPI) met the four MEPs – Regina Doherty, Seán Kelly, Maria Walsh and Nina Carberry – last month. It is part of a coalition that supports the introduction of a content production levy on TV streamers to fund Irish productions Such levies are in place in some other European countries.

    The Social Democrats have been successful in a bid to secure two Oireachtas committee chairperson roles by arguing that suspended TD Eoin Hayes is still a deputy for the party. The Committee on Dáil Reform met on Wednesday to discuss the establishment of the various committees. The process of selecting which party gets committee chairperson roles uses the D’Hondt method, which allots positions depending on the strength of parties and groups.

    In the Dáil Taoiseach Micheál Martin has kicked off a debate on the tariffs. He calls the US tariff announcements “deeply concerning and regrettable” saying they have had an “immediate and negative impact on global financial market”. Mr Martin said there is “no way to sugar-coat it” the 20 per cent blanket tariff on goods from the EU will potentially have a very significant impact on the Irish economy.

    Ministerial sign-off would be required for a levy on television streaming services such as Netflix under proposals approved by Cabinet on Tuesday. Minister for Media Patrick O’Donovan said at the weekend that people using such services are “paying enough”, and he does not see “any reason to put a levy on them at the moment and charge them any more”.
