Last week marked the 60th anniversary of one of the most vigorously opposed and yet ultimately transformative laws in American history, the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The legislation banned centuries of discrimination in employment as well as segregation in public transportation and accommodations, affecting the lives of millions of Black Americans. The passage of the act also laid the foundation for laws protecting women, immigrants, veterans, and members of the LGBTQ community.
