"It's good to be back home," Mike Hogan says as he looks around his still charred property near Clear Lake. It's been 12 months since the Gray fire tore through the area and destroyed Hogan's world, burning his home to the ground. The tremendous physical loss also took a medical toll. "Doctors said the stroke was probably from the stress of the fire and losing everything," Mike says. Mike's recovery from his stroke continues, along with his recovery from the fire. SPOKANE, Wash. - "Let's brainstorm really quick on stories," Chris Trechter tells his Salk Middle School students standing outside their classroom-turned-news studio. The ideas come rapid fire from the enthusiastic middle school journalists. While the whiteboard inside the classroom is divided into three categories - Investigative, Hard News and Fluff - on this last Friday in May, the students focus on ideas that seem to put a bowtie on the year and look ahead to next year.

ELK, Wash. - "It's as close to Hell as I think you can get here on Earth," Spokane County Sheriff's Deputy Brittan Morgan described as he recounted escaping the Oregon Road fire. "In many ways it goes beyond description of what it was like," Sheriff John Nowells added. "It scares me as the Sheriff. To see the dangers that my men and women were in (and) that the community was in." Morgan was one of many called to help with Level 3 evacuations being issued on the afternoon of Aug.
