At the Cheltenham Literary Festival, Lady Anne Glenconner, a former Lady-in-Waiting to Princess Margaret, informed a packed audience that fish knives are ‘common’. She should know. As job descriptions go, being a former Lady-in-Waiting is itself very common, and being a former Lady-in-Waiting to Princess Margaret is very common indeed – only a couple of notches up from being a former Lady-in-Waiting to the Duchess of York. Lady Anne also ticks several other boxes marked ‘common’.

Home Community Steve Zaitz’s ‘Blue, Sweat, and Tears’ exhibit celebrates Northport’s athletic spirit By Craig BrownSteve Zaitz is passionate about high school sports and community as can be seen by his photography, which is on display at Trinity Episcopal Church on Main Street in Northport. The exhibition started Sunday, Oct. 6, and will continue through Oct. 19. There are photos of young athletes playing football, baseball, lacrosse, basketball and so many other competitions.

When I was a boy, I owned half a dozen LPs, or (for those under 50) Long Playing records. One of my favourites was BBC Stereo Sound Effects Volume 7, which featured a selection of noises, some familiar, others less so. Side One included a jet aircraft taking off and landing, a thunderstorm with heavy rain, children in a playground, an orchestra tuning up and – a familiar sound in the 1970s, though less so now – ‘strikers picketing’.
