For many people, daylight saving time (DST) is a nuisance. The clocks change, sleep is disrupted, and everyone ends up groggy and grumpy – so much so that there are growing movements to abolish DST entirely in both the US and EU. But for me, DST is a gift. And that comes down to two things. First, I live far north of the equator. Secondly, I have Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). FOMO and gamification are terrible, evil things – which, in my case, happen to work wonders. Waggle a digital trinket in my general direction and I’ll dutifully perform a task I otherwise might have avoided. Learning a language? Sure. Tinkling some ivories? Done. But then it does now have Gemini AI inside – and Google were once the Boston Dynamics guys of scariest ever Christmas video fame. So who knows?

When Photoshop came to iPad, tech pundits breathlessly announced that – finally – Apple’s tablet was ready to take on the might of laptops and desktops. And now, even your smartphone could be capable, at a pinch, of ‘proper work.’For me, there was a flicker of excitement.
