NATO has set out a planned near-term increase to defence spending by its member nations, as the alliance continues to evolve in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The western military grouping’s current baseline target is pegged at the equivalent of 2% of a nation’s gross domestic product (GDP), but that threshold – which was met by only 22 of its 32 members last year – falls far short of a requirement to protect the nations while also delivering equipment support to Kyiv.

Germany is to equip an operational subset of its Airbus Defence & Space A400M tactical transport fleet with self-protection equipment from Elbit Systems. Announced by the European airframer on 6 June, the award will lead to the integration of directed infrared countermeasures (DIRCM) equipment on 23 of the Luftwaffe’s airlifters. The installation is currently undergoing testing in Seville, Spain, using a German air force A400M.

The NATO Flight Training Europe (NFTE) initiative has gained four new participants, with Canada, Denmark, Norway and Poland having signed up during a NATO defence ministers meeting in Brussels on 5 June. Confirmation of the new entrants increases participation in the cooperative scheme to 17 nations.

Germany’s parliament has approved a planned purchase of the Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace Joint Strike Missile (JSM), with the precision-attack weapon to arm its future fleet of Lockheed Martin F-35As. Cleared by the Bundestag on 4 June and announced the following day, the government-to-government deal will be worth around NKr6.5 billion ($645 million) to its Norwegian prime contractor, Kongsberg says.

Grob Aircraft – the producer of the G120TP military trainer – is to be purchased by German company Helsing, the companies announced on 4 June. Headquartered in Tussenhausen, Bavaria, along with its production facilities, Grob Aircraft will be acquired from its current owner H3 Aerospace for undisclosed terms, subject to the receipt of regulatory approvals. Announcing their agreement, the companies say the combination will “create significant potential for innovation and growth”.
