Captain Wes Royle is reluctant to set any targets for Vernon Carus after ‘an interesting’ start to the new cricket season. The new Northern Pyramid structure, which saw the Northern Premier League (NPL) split into two divisions with a promotion and relegation format incorporating the Moore and Smalley Palace Shield, has certainly been a big change in local club cricket. A Palace Shield club for the vast majority of its existence, Vernons won a place in Division Two of the NPL.

Fulwood & Broughton were the big winners in the Northern Premier Cricket League Division One on Saturday. They were the only ones who were able to register a victory on a weekend which was greatly affected by rain. Ben Parkinson’s men defeated Longridge by five wickets at Longridge at Highfield, in a match which was reduced to 27 over per side, to move within one point off the top. The visitors batted first and posted 129-6 with skipper Zac Christie (32) and Tom Howarth (30) the top scorers.

Morecambe moved up to third in the Moore and Smalley Palace Shield after a fine two-wicket win away at second-placed Fylde. In a match reduced to 25 over per side, the hosts batted first and posted a competitive 149-4 thanks to skipper Dan Smith’s excellent knock of 78 which came off 66 balls and included seven boundaries and one six. He was assisted by Ted Bain and Theo Smith who scored 30 and 29 respectively. Rizwan Patel took two wickets.

Eccleston boxer Mark Jeffers knows his performance will be closely scrutinised when he takes on American Sean Hemphill. The two go head-to-head at Barnsley’s Oakwell Stadium in a super-middleweight clash this evening. Jeffers, left, has long been talked about as somebody who could go right to the very top of the sport and win world titles. And he will be eager to put on a show especially as his performance will be directly measured against domestic rival Callum Simpson.
