    The radical writer Colin Ward, were he alive today, would have celebrated his 100th birthday today (14 August). Ward was a visionary in the fields of social politics, planning, participation and social history, and his ‘soft power’ influence is still felt in the way architects and planners practise today. He played a crucial role in creating space for participation within the planning system so it might serve the communities and people it is meant to benefit.

    A recent letter from the Environment, Farms and Rural Affairs Committee (EFRA) Committee to Environment Secretary Steve Barclay (see below) argued that the provision of green infrastructure should be a much higher priority in government spending. The committee is calling for an urgent re-evaluation of investment priorities to enable local authorities to provide and maintain green infrastructure, as well as for more support from central government generally.

In fact, it is increasingly present in every industry. AI – something that in my childhood was hidden in sci-fi subcultures – has nudged itself insistently into our everyday lives as if it were an obvious good.

As a working parent myself, this is a period of juggling, characterised by trying to reply to emails or Slack threads from a kayak on the Ouse.
