The first freight train on this route in 25 years has now carried salt from Ukraine along the Basarabeasca-Berezino line. This rail link historically connected Ukraine to Romania, passing through Moldova. But it was long abandoned until a border and customs station was opened on March 25. The line was reconstructed months ago, bypassing Moldova's pro-Moscow breakaway region of Transdniester.
