    Four months in, and Victoria’s recently opened transition housing is proving to be a success. Last June, SOLID Outreach and the City of Victoria announced a new transitional housing space to be located at 2155 Dowler Place. The SOLID-run site began operating as a transitional housing space in January, and has seen 29 individuals come through their facility to find more permanent housing in just four months.

    Victoria’s city council has opted not to approve an application to construct a 12-storey hotel on the site of the historic, burnt down Plaza Hotel. Instead, the City staff will have to go back to the applicant and work with them to amend the application so it adheres to current guidelines, bylaws and policies.

    Nanaimo’s fast ferry service, operated by Vancouver Island Ferry Company (VIFC), have announced their CEO, Alastair Caddick, will be stepping down to allow the company to grow. In the short time Hullo has been offering a ferry service between Nanaimo and downtown Vancouver, they have been able to establish themselves, now operating 14 daily sailings.

    A BC organization advocating for universal, public pharmacare, AccessBC, is calling on the newly elected prime minister to commit to expanding Canada’s pharmacare legislation. AccessBC is a grassroots group that succeeded in advocating for free prescription contraception in BC, and now works to see the same thing accomplished in other provinces and territories. Last year, the Canada Pharmacare Act (Bill C-64) was passed, with initial coverage of contraceptives and diabetes medications.

  • Wildfire on small island off the shores of East Sooke has been put out

    The only active wildfire on Vancouver Island is now out. Earlier this week, a wildfire was spotted on a small island in the Juan de Fuca Strait, just off of East Sooke Regional Park. The island is called Secretary Island, and the wildfire that took over the small piece of land was first discovered on Monday, May 5th.
