Young people are listening to exorcists. The endless need for content in Catholic media, especially on podcasts, has led to a host of newly-minted celebrity exorcists—many of whom are humble, helpful priests, and some of whom seem, frankly, nuts. People love to hear about evil. Mafia movies and shows do great business. True crime—at least since In Cold Blood—has been its own industry. And like the Bugsy Siegels or Charles Mansons of this world, demons need their chroniclers. Exorcists fit the bill.

Each August I remember, again, to be grateful for all the boring afternoons, the times my parents did not rescue us by providing an activity, the times we were shooed away from the TV, exiled to lands of our own invention. The soul cannot grow without boredom, which is why so many modern souls are underdeveloped. They have too rarely received the gift of boredom, and so have never aimlessly explored the bookshelf, or dug a hole just to dig it, or dared to walk past the house with the mean dog.

Rather than engage with the Faith, the endless objector will rehearse again and again the many “foolish” things that a life of Faith would compel him to accept.
