    June 21 – 23 was the USA Judo Junior Olympic National and International Championships, held at the David Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburg, Pa. Four young Santa Clara residents who study at Santa Clara’s Nakano Judo Academy attended this competition to demonstrate their Japanese martial arts smarts. Elijah Bergado, 10, won second place in the National Intermediate category and third place in the International Intermediate category, both for competitors under 28 kg.

    In late May, Santa Clara University (SCU) celebrated its newest outdoor public art installation. With each letter standing 6 feet in height and the entire word spreading out to 25 feet in length, the sculpture reading “SOMOꙄ” refers to the Spanish phrase, “we are.” This art installation is located near the de Saisset Museum.

    On June 15, Kimberly Vernon, 27, of Santa Clara, was crowned Miss California 2024 at Miss California’s week-long Centennial Celebration held at the Visalia Convention Center. On Tuesday night, June 11, Vernon received awards in the categories for Health and Fitness and the Preliminary Evening Gown. Vernon won a total of $21,000 from the Miss California competition.
