Years of slow but steady immigration from Cameroon have made Minnesota an unexpected hub for the central African community. The state's Cameroonian population has more than doubled since 2016, when peaceful protests in the country's English-speaking regions escalated into civil war with the government of the French-speaking majority. "The media doesn't say much about it," said Adrian Abongmbu, a Cameroon immigrant and accounting manager at Alight, a Minneapolis-based humanitarian aid agency.

Minneapolis residents will elect a new City Council on Tuesday, November 7. Municipal elections are typically held every four years, but due to redistricting, voters will get another chance to cast votes just two years after the 2021 election. All 13 seats on the Minneapolis City Council are on the ballot, 12 are contested, and at least two spots will go to newcomers. Incumbents Lisa Goodman (Ward 7) and Andrew Johnson (Ward 12) are not seeking re-election.

All seven city council seats in St. Paul are up for grabs this election, and four of them are open seats. The Democratic Farmer-Labor Party has endorsed candidates in each of the open seats, but they have plenty of challengers. In total, 30 candidates are running for all of the seats. City Council members Mitra Jalali, Rebecca Noecker, and Nelsie Yang, all DFLers, are running for reelection.
