About 250 years ago, Gen. William Whipple and Prince Whipple engaged in distinctly separate struggles for freedom. The general helped lead the fight for independence from a British tyrant, and Prince sought personal independence from – well, Gen. Whipple. Eventually both men achieved their goal. Their remarkable story will be celebrated later this month during Kittery’s unique annual Independence Day ceremony, locally known as Whipple’s Reading. But now that moniker holds a double meaning.
