For all of my life, I have been fat. Even at my smallest, I was larger than everyone else around me. A lot of kids loved me—and I was a very argumentative child who learned at an early age how to advocate for myself, so I never necessarily allowed anyone who didn’t love me to bully me—but I was picked on often for being fat. As a publication dedicated to liberatory media and a reparative and inclusive future for journalism writ large, Scalawag is ecstatic to welcome Sherronda J. Those words took me back to the foreword I wrote for James's most recent title, In Pursuit of Revolutionary Love: Precarity, Power, Communities, and the return to that foreword brought me here.

Editor's note: This essay was originally published in WearYourVoice magazine at the height of the summer 2020 uprisings, when the murder of Atlanta's Rayshard Brooks and the violent police response to protestors warranted a deeper understanding of the intimate connections between Atlanta and Palestine's respective carceral apparatuses—both of which mutually benefit from the GILEE program.
