Barking & Dagenham College and WorldSkills UK welcomed Deputy State Secretary Mr. Gergely Pálmai, from Hungary’s Ministry of Culture and Innovation, last week. The purpose of the visit was to explore best practices in vocational and technical education. It was facilitated by WorldSkills UK as part of its commitment to international collaboration and skills exchange, to drive excellence in technical education and apprenticeships across borders.

Barking & Dagenham College hosted a series of events recently, all designed to break the stigma around mental health and promote open discussions within the college community. An insightful panel discussion entitled ‘Breaking the Stigma: Mental Health in the Classroom’ brought students from across the college together to share their views and opinions on mental health. The lively discussion proved a great success, sparking meaningful conversations around the challenges faced by young people today.

Steve Thompson, MBE, MD of Dagenham & Redbridge FC, has been nominated for a prestigious Further Education (FE) Hall of Fame Award. Steve, a Barking & Dagenham College alumnus, is being recognised for his contributions to further education and to young people, in particular youth sport. The FE Hall of Fame which is organised by the Association of Colleges, honours outstanding contributions made by further education alumni.

Katie Howey sat in a school maths lesson, fiddling with a pot of pens on the windowsill next to her, seeing how the light casted differing shadows as she moved the pencils around. She was fascinated at an early age about sunlight and how objects looked in it at different times of day. Her art teachers, however, were dismissive of her interest in still objects, urging her to look at going into portraits or landscapes, as these were the things ‘people are interested in’.

Photography students curated a pop-up archive of 19th century photograph’s portraying Britain’s black history. The project was arranged with the curatorial team of London’s Autograph gallery. Established in 1988, Autograph’s mission is to champion the work of artists who use photography and film to highlight questions of race, representation, human rights and social justice.
