It’s 10am on a cobbled street in Bethnal Green and the air is filled with chatter and floating blossom. East end geezers are yelling at the top of their lungs about tulips (“Two for a fiiiiiver”). Young couples in matching bomber jackets are rubbing hungover eyes and surveying the daffodils. Miniature dogs are weaving in between legs while babies grab at stray plants with chubby hands.

You’ve heard of the one-and-done coat. You’ve heard of the one-and-done dress. But what about one-and-done trainers? While it’s not advisable to allow your trainers to serve as an entire outfit (you’d probably get arrested), there’s definitely something to be said for trainers being the focal point of a look. Essentially: trainers that are bold enough that the rest of the outfit can be as low-key as possible.

I’ve always been a staunch believer in decluttering—on a conceptual level. Ideally, I’d have a single rail of clothes and a near-empty house. In reality, though, I live in a relatively small southeast London flat with a wardrobe that might actually give way (from all the jeans) and a partner who loves old books and secondhand electronics. Together, we have created a home that is currently giving “jumble sale”. Learning how to declutter your home doesn’t have to be a complete clusterf*ck though.

Spring in the UK – well anywhere, but especially the UK – is a nightmare, outfit-wise. It’s often not cold or warm, but a secret third thing, with weather that can plunge in the opposite direction at a moment’s notice. Which is why it’s always good to leave the house in a failsafe outfit. Some go for jeans and a tee, others go for a light shirt and tracksuit. But I like to go for what could be called “The Hailey Bieber Method” – aka denim shorts, socks and loafers.
