You’ve probably seen it. In the queue of any bar in an area with extortionate rents. Wrapped around a New York-style pizza slice somewhere in Dalston. Blowing out double apple smoke from a pub doorway. I’m talking about that little noncommittal moustache that so many guys seem to have now. You know the one: it looks like it’s been grown on a whim, as if they only just decided last week. Or, even better, forgot to shave it off because they were too busy being dudes.

The 1999 pilot episode of Spaced opens with one of the most familiar conundrums known to man: getting broken up with and having to find a new place to live (in this case it’s Tim, played by a bleach-haired, baggy-trousered Simon Pegg, who's just been dumped). A few moments later and we’re in a classic greasy spoon, as Tim and Daisy (Jessica Hynes), who both have to move out of their respective flats, end up slumped at the same table by chance.

It could be one of the most iconic opening scenes of the ‘90s. Mickey and Mallory Knox, played by Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis, rock up to a dusty roadside diner, Robert Gordon’s “The Way I Walk” snaking out of the jukebox. Mickey’s in a black leather biker jacket and tiny red circle shades, yin and yang stud earrings glinting in his ears. Mallory’s in low-rise boot-cuts and a lacy red bikini top, a scorpion tattoo peeping out of her waistband.

Tyler Durden did “rizz” before rizz was even a thing. Brad Pitt’s muscle-bound antagonist in Fight Club, with his array of freaky aviator shades and greasy spiked hair, is still the guy that every guy low-key wishes he could be – or high-key, if you’re the film’s insomniac narrator. He is rizz personified; a man who wears a jacket, rather than letting the jacket wear him. He even makes graphic 1970s shirts look cool.
