On a hot sunny day in Auckland, New Zealand, I am standing in a long line of tourists waiting for an extremely delayed double-decker tour bus. Someone shouts, “Is there a doctor?!” But I'm already on my way, gently nudging the flabbergasted tour guide away from the limp, crumpled body of an older man lying unconscious on the sidewalk. The man's skin is clammy; his eyes are rolled back. No pulse, no breathing. Instinctively, I kneel next to the man's body and start CPR.

Next year I will be old enough to qualify for Medicare. My memory is not as sharp as when I was younger. However, no matter how old I become, and no matter how shaky my memory, I believe I will be haunted by the most vivid memory of my first day at college. My mother and younger sister, Devone, had dropped me off at college and were preparing to leave. Devone was only 7 years old at the time, and I was her father figure. I had helped raise her after our father had died 5 years earlier.
