    Events, Recommendations, What to Watch The 80th Venice Film Festival is upon us, with the jury – led by La La Land director Damien Chazelle – tasked with mulling over a seriously impressive selection of films including new works by Sofia Coppola (Priscilla), Michael Mann (Ferrari) and David Fincher (The Killer). While the red carpets may be largely shorn of Hollywood actors, due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, the films will surely speak for themselves.

    ASFF 2022, ASFF Alumni, Filmmaker Focus Krystal S. Lowe is a choreographer, dancer and filmmaker. Hailing from Bermuda originally, before settling in the Welsh town Newport, Lowe’s mission statement is about creating stage and screen work that explores themes of identity, mental health and wellbeing, and empowerment to challenge introspection. Her debut short Daughters of the Sea, is a retelling of Welsh folklore through the power of dance, and it screened at ASFF 2022.

    The Edinburgh International Film Festival is back. Despite worrying events last autumn when the Centre for the Moving Image (CMI), the charity that runs the festival, appointed administrators, the EIFF returns this year in August. The scaled-down “special one-year edition,” is curated by new programme director Kate Taylor. It will run for six days, featuring new and inspiring works of global and local filmmakers.

    Jessi Gutch is a BAFTA Elevate Producer and BIFA-nominated writer, who is behind a series of celebrated shorts, both narrative and documentary-driven. In 2020, she collaborated with Molly Manning Walker on The Forgotten C, a short commissioned in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. She also collaborated with Liz Jackson on Blind As A Beat, which was awarded The Listening Pitch at Aesthetica Short Film Festival 2021.
