Mull was one of the places we holidayed, more than once, way back when our kids were wee. Reminiscing on the upper deck and slowly pivoting my gaze around the 360 panoramas, I recalled with a grin the weans’ excited expressions and animated anticipation for all the adventures that might unfold on the magical isle. It felt great to be returning after a long hiatus, albeit with a tinge of sadness for the absence of the two hyperactive boys in my mind’s eye.

On receiving the invite by Charlotte to contribute a wee piece to the wonderful ‘On Landscape’ magazine my initial natural reaction was, of course, ‘no problem’ and ‘thank you for the invite’ But before I throw myself into something (hopefully!) resembling an answer I feel I must address the weird mixture of emotions and intellectual discombobulation that ensued. The question seemed so straightforward on first read, basically pick a favourite image and discuss. Shouldn’t be too difficult eh?..

Oban, the “little bay”. The very mention of the name invokes a warm rush of nostalgia swimming into my mind’s-eye. Vivid visions of chip-chasing seagulls whirling in the crystal sky above the bustling harbour bay, saffron sunsets over the Firth of Lorn and a malty dram sipped before a slip into a contented slumber.
