This was a taxing year for Syracuse. From early in the season it was apparent this would be rocky. The Orange just avoided a calamitous loss to LeMoyne in the opener, got drummed in Brooklyn, were beaten by a Georgetown team that would finish in the bottom half of the Big East, and began the ACC campaign with consecutive losses. Nothing would be easy. The defeats piled up in conference, and blown leads grew more absurd by the week.

Adrian Autry is a guy you’d love to see succeed but it is nearly impossible to defend how poorly this team is coached. While the Orange beat Florida State in the first round of the ACC Tournament, it was once again a thrill ride, complete with turbulence and a near meltdown. Ending games with mistakes and mind-numbing play has become the standard this year, not the exception. Autry is a direct link to the most iconic era of Syracuse basketball.

Etan Thomas was as gritty and smart as any Syracuse player ever. He was a two-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year. He was first-team All-Big East. He was a rebounder, rim defender, and leader in the locker room. He graduated with a degree in business management, was a lottery pick in the NBA Draft and spent a decade in the association. Thomas is also watching every SU game. He’s as credible on Orange hoops as they come.

It was fun while it lasted Clemson and Florida State, right? The two schools have dropped their lawsuits against the ACC and will come crawling back to the conference. Yes, they will now have a chance at higher revenue distribution. But the ultimate goal for both schools was to challenge the grant of rights media agreement and be able to leave for another conference, namely the Big Ten or the SEC.

In the win over NC State last week an interesting nugget was uncovered. As the Wolfpack closed the gap in the second half, Adrian Autry called a timeout and his team responded. The Orange scored on 8 of its next 9 possessions and only turned the ball over once. What was said in that huddle? “Just lock in. Don’t be punked,” said Chris Bell. “That’s what he told us. Go out there and be tough.”These are the types of coaching axioms that fill history books.
