The chair of one of the Northern Territory's Aboriginal land councils has defended his position, following calls from the federal opposition for his removal from his elected position. The Central Land Council (CLC), which represents some 24,000 remote Indigenous Territorians, voted former deputy Warren Williams into the top position in September last year, replacing Matthew Palmer. Mr Palmer was ousted from the position after the land council lost confidence in him.

Speaking at the St Matthew's Australia Day mass in Albury on Sunday, Member for Farrer Sussan Ley made an analogy between the arrival of the First Fleet and a mission to colonise Mars, such as has been proposed by tech billionaire Elon Musk.

Joanne Taylor looks back on Christmas 2021 with fond memories. Tradition dictated a family trip to Coral Bay, an exquisite slice of blinding beach and crystal waters on Baiyungu Country, 1200 kilometres north of Perth. Joanne's son, Wesley Lockyer, was there with her. "That's what we do as a family," the Nyamal woman told NITV. "We were together all the time."It's the last Christmas she spent with her son.

Queensland's state coroner has ruled that police officers acted appropriately in the arrest of a Kamilaroi man who subsequently died of a cardiac arrest. Ashley Charles Washington was 31 years old and suffering from poor mental health in December 2020 when police were called to attend a reported break in at a home in Toowoomba. Mr Washington was found in a nearby street by Senior Constable Jamie Williams, and tasered six times by the officer during the course of a violent arrest.

First held in 1986, the prestigious awards, this year presented by the Indigenous Sports Network, celebrate the wealth of First Nations athletic talent from across the continent.
