This week would be a very good time to drop into the downtown gallery, Art on 1st. As the name suggests, it’s on First Street Southwest, more or less across from Martin’s Downtown Bar & Grill. Artist Annie Schultz and photographer Rick Sheridan run the place. They’re business and life partners who found each other during grief counseling after their spouses died. Art on 1st formally launched as a tax-exempt nonprofit June 1. (Some more about that is below).

Around this time last year, I told you about the launch and success of a local reading program inspired by famed entertainer Dolly Parton. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library program in Montgomery County is one of more than 70 local affiliates in Virginia. The famed singer-songwriter launched an organization to encourage kids to read in 1995, as a tribute to her father, a hard-working Tennessean who never learned how.

You probably heard about the $45 million (perhaps more) in taxpayer funds that President Donald Trump spent on a Washington, D.C., parade for the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary Saturday. The big soiree happened to also fall on Trump’s 79th birthday, and plenty of Americans reckoned the timing not at all coincidental. Judging by the photos and video from the nation’s capital, there were plenty of unfilled seats and places to stand along the District of Columbia parade route.

There are a few things we know for certain about two sewage backups in the finished basement of Charley and Joan Gattusos’ ranch-style house. It is on the 3500 block of Robyn Road, just off Colonial Avenue in Southwest Roanoke. One: The first backup occurred Feb. 15 during 2.7 inches of rainfall that followed a 4-inch snowfall. The second was March 5, also in heavy rain — which can overload a sewage system.
