The Irish government needs to introduce measures to tackle the lack of truck drivers, according to Clare’s youngest female articulated lorry driver. Quin truck driver, Sophie Howard attributes the current driver shortage in Ireland to the lack of young people taking up truck driving as they don’t find it appealing and huge numbers are opting to emigrate due to the high costing of living and scarcity of affordable housing.

THE “common sense” approach adopted by Deputy Joe Cooney (FG)since his election to the 36th Dáil has been lauded by the Tánaiste Simon Harris. Speaking at the official opening of Deputy Cooney’s new constituency office in Ennis, Mr Harris said every time the former councillor speaks at a Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting it is “grounded in common sense, not telling us what can’t be done but providing the practical feedback he hears from people across this county”.

A new model administering energy efficient retrofitting grants for home owners in the Defective Concrete Blocks (DCB) Scheme needs to be introduced, according to the founder of the Clare Pyrite Action Group. After receiving conflicting advice from One Stop Shop providers, the Crusheen resident who has to demolish her home, said she is unlikely to use the current impractical model because of alleged extra red tape and mark-up consultancy fees of consultancy fees of between €4,000 and €7,500,.

HAVING helped found the East Clare Musical Society 20 years ago, some members are still involved in their latest production – a spectacular staging of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Stage Manager, Rebecca Atkinson, who edited all the backing tracks for the rehearsals, was one of the original cast from the show 20 years ago when she featured in the children’s chorus.

Plans to transform Killaloe Courthouse into a cultural and musical venue have taken a significant step forward after Clare County Council applied for funding under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF). Following the completion of a feasibility study, the local authority is seeking to undertake a detailed design of the repurposed building, which has been an important part of Killaloe’s civic and societal history for almost two centuries.
