Engines rumbled and chrome gleamed at the Barons’ truck show, hosted at Lloydminster Comprehensive High School on June 4. Students showed off their rides at the annual car and truck show, held in the teacher’s parking lot. Around 20 students brought vehicles to show, while hundreds came out to watch. Emmett Sherbinin never expected to win Alberta gold. The Grade 10 Lloydminster Comprehensive High School student joined an Electrical 10 class last year out of curiosity, which led him to the top of the Skills Canada Alberta podium. I built a mock-up of what the competition would be,” he said, noting electrical installation was an accidental love affair.

Devine Anokwute is setting the bar for future Holy Rosary High School students after graduating at 15. On top of that accomplishment, she also won the $10,000 Scholars Admission Award scholarship for the school of her choice — the University of Toronto. “The award specifically recognizes and rewards the university’s most outstanding secondary school students on admission,” states the U of T’s website.

During last week’s incident where individuals barricaded themselves in a building on the east side of Lloydminster, I saw two people doing things that left me wondering, what were you thinking? I never thought I would see these things during an emergency and never want to again. In my line of work, we often team up with emergency personnel to help inform the public during unfolding situations.

Lloydminster continues to support evacuees from northern wildfires, with help from partners like the Lloydminster Exhibition. Read more: VIDEO: Rush Lake aerial viewAt the height of the emergency, 290 evacuees stayed in the city. That number has dropped significantly in the last week. Jackie Tomayer, general manager at Lloydminster Exhibition, said they are ready to help. “Lloyd Ex provides a facility to host large numbers of people. We have the chairs, tables and room to spread out,” said Tomayer.
