Eastern Maine Community College awarded degrees to 332 students during its 57th commencement Saturday in Bangor at the Cross Insurance Center. The commencement marked the first graduating year for students receiving their associate degree under the recent state program that covers tuition for two years. The college also awarded 123 certificates to students. Marilou Ranta, whose Monson restaurant The Quarry won a James Beard award last year, was the keynote speaker.

The BDN erroneously published a story that was false on the front page of Thursday’s print and e-editions. The story stated that a body found in Caribou on Tuesday had been identified as missing Washburn man Erik Foote and cited Maine State Police as the source. No public statement has been made about the identification of the body by state police as of Thursday morning. When we saw the error we reached out immediately to the Foote family to apologize.

Maine’s senators are calling for the Army to investigate how it handled concerns about a reservist who later carried out the state’s deadliest mass shooting. In a Nov. 2 letter to Army Inspector General Lt. Gen. Donna Martin, U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King questioned why Army officials didn’t appear to trigger laws in two states designed to disarm dangerous people, despite Robert R. Card II’s threat to “shoot up” the Army Reserve base in Saco.

A Smyrna man set a fire in the men’s clothing section of the Bangor Walmart on Friday night, police said. The Bangor Fire Department and the Bangor Police Department got the call for a fire at the Stillwater Avenue store just before 6 pm on Friday night. The fire was being put out by sprinklers when authorities arrived, and no one was injured, WABI reported. Lucas Landry, 44, was on probation for burglary when he set the fire, police said. He was arrested at his residence the next day.
