    May is officially here. The lilacs are in bloom. The college baseball and softball regular schedules are approaching the chance for postseason play. More importantly, the '25 college football is less than four months away. It's time once again for Husker Dan (aka The Geezer Guru of the Gridiron) to ask for your input. As you know, Husker fans are the most dedicated and knowledgeable sports fans on the globe.

    After Nebraska's Pinstripe Bowl win over Boston College in December, Husker fans were already counting the days until the Husker spring football game arrived. Then came the jarring news that the days of the annual Red-White game had sadly come to an end.  Husker fans were told that In lieu of a real football game, there was going to be what is called a Spring "Event."  It is scheduled for Saturday, April 26th in Lincoln, Nebraska. So what's the event going to look like?

    Husker Dan:Why are so many players leaving the Husker football program? We've lost some really good kids. What's going on? Pearl Lee GatesMountain Home, ARPearl:  There are many reasons why football players are leaving. Before this year's NCAA 105 roster limit, the top reasons were:  a need for more playing time, coaching changes, family issues and a chance to play for a better program.

    Although the Husker season opener is over 200 days away, I thought it would be a good time to take a quick look at what kind of competition NU will face this fall. Gone are Ohio State, Indiana, Colorado and Wisconsin (NU went 2-2 last year against them),  Back after a one year absence are Minnesota and Northwestern. Also on the schedule are traditional powerhouse programs like Michigan, Penn State and Iowa. NU will face seven teams that had losing records in 2024 and five with winning records.

    Let's begin with number 10. 10.)  Transfer portal players impacted the Husker football programIt's hard to imagine what life would have been for Nebraska last fall had players like RB Dante Dowdell, DB Ceyair Wright, WR Jahmal Banks and WR Isaiah Neyor not come to Nebraska. 9.)  Matt Rhule shook up his coaching staff. The changes began last July with the resignation of former Husker DB coach Evan Cooper. Luckily, Rhule was able to hire John Butler to take Cooper's place.
