    If ever there were a sports car that really didn’t deserve that moniker, it must be the Audi TT. Call it a performance car or even a sports coupé, but that particular phrase – sports car – means something different. At least to me. A sports car is one designed from a clean sheet for that very purpose. They’re packaged and laid out with driving dynamics as the top priority. A110s, 911s and MX-5s are sports cars. They are not related to more humdrum vehicles in any way.

On the happy day that Gordon Murray’s people ring up and ask me over to try a T.50, I can’t see the deliberations dragging for long, but the rest of the time we have to think and think hard.     Well, that was quite the week for one of Britain’s best known car makers. While its incumbents are busy deleting ordinary and creating exuberant – and while we await the full reveal of the new concept car in the early hours of 3 December – I’ve been thinking about some of my favourite recent Jaguars. And the XFR is certainly one of those.  The first arrived in 2009 and was soon facelifted with the sleeker, far more attractive front end, seen here, in 2011.

And when the sun glances off his mirror shades and dazzlingly white teeth as his hand reaches into his holster, you’ll start scanning the horizon for itinerant underwear vendors earning a living in the Mojave Desert.

    The Jaguar reinvention drip, drip, drip continues. Last week it was a handful of photographs of a heavily camouflaged development prototype. This week it’s the reveal of nothing less than an all-new brand identity, says Jaguar. And no, that’s not the background cast of – they are the sort of exuberant, creative and artistic people to whom the next generation Jaguars are designed to appeal, it seems.
