Monday this week, April 7, 2025, marked the 50th anniversary of a landmark piece of occupational safety law, Cal-OSHA’s ban on the use of the short-handled hoe in agricultural work. The order followed a California Supreme Court ruling that declared it an “unsafe hand tool,” a more formal description of el brazo del diablo, “the devil’s arm,” which left farm workers with herniated discs and sciatica amongst related back and skeletal injuries.

Like many of us, I grew up hearing fears that workers would be replaced by robots, but that all seemed far away, and the scenario played out differently. Instead, American manufacturing moved to China, where low-wage workers work long hours to make our clothes and mobile phones. As factory jobs declined, the service sector boomed, with a corresponding increase in warehouse, delivery and food preparation work. That sector is now changing too, and it looks like the robot future is making inroads.
