As Gino Ferraro looked out into the crowd at The Delancy in Manhattan’s Lower East side two weekends ago, he realized that for the first time, he no longer wished there were more people in the crowd. It was a far cry from years of playing shows at bars to small crowds of mostly friends and family; this was the big time, the most important show he’d played yet.

The University of Connecticut Jazz Combos took to the stage at von der Mehden Recital Hall on Sunday, April 7 for an afternoon performance featuring the talents of small jazz groups. Unlike UConn’s jazz ensemble, a large 20-piece group that features full saxophone, trombone and trumpet sections, the jazz combos are small-scale ensembles that feature only four to seven members. The combos are organized by musical themes and ability, and each group regularly performs shows both on and off-campus.

Campus is buzzing in anticipation of this weekend’s games and rightfully so, as the team looks ready to win it all. We all want to find our purpose in life, something that gets us out of bed in the morning with the energy to take on a new day. After years of searching, Eddie Dahill found that purpose with music. Dahill is a talented multi-instrumentalist who is the drummer of Ruby Leftstep, an alternative rock band that has become one of the biggest names in the Connecticut music scene. At the heart of their sound is Dahill’s emphatic and John Bonham-esque drumming, as well as his songwriting contributions.
