    Autumn in our home is a different sort of celebration. By the end of September, I’m outside stringing lights. By the end of September, I’m outside stringing lights. In our garage, we have every different shade, from reds and greens to the icicle blues and twinkling yellows to orange and black. We have strings, nets, gutter hangers and long rolls on thick plastic spools. We have those spinning ones that clamp onto the fence. We have the electric ones that look like flames.

    SUMMER, 2024I’m holding my breath. After ten years, I’ve returned to my grandmother’s house, this time with my family in tow. I don’t know how this is going to go. I have some trouble finding the house at first, trying to remember the street name, zig-zagging through a neighborhood that has fallen into disrepair, into decay. As a child I walked these streets with my cousins, with my mother – to a little market on the corner, to a playground down the block.

With a baby on the way, I’ve begun thinking about my own childhood as a way to explore how I might bring my soon-to-be daughter closer to the history of her family. My father is still with us, but he’s the last remaining immediate connection my daughter will have to her past. One of the challenges of being an older parent is that I’ll have to dig deeper to find connectivity.

    In my late teens and early twenties, music literally saved me. Recently, I watched a short film about Pink Floyd’s album Wish You Were Here and in it, a reactor listened to the title song for the first time and they were nearly brought to tears. Music can move you, save you, and I’m here to testify to that. And before I’m crucified for my taste in music, it’s worth noting that mostly (not all the time, but mostly) the style or genre doesn’t matter.
