On June 14, 2024, at 8 a.m. was the start of the inaugural Sexuality and Gender Identity Healthcare Symposium. Healthcare providers discussed several impactful topics such as Transgender healthcare for providers, Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer, deconstructing binaries in Bisexuality, zero suicide – awareness and prevention, plus more regarding substance use disorders and holistic ways of healing. The event was held at the Campus Center at Bakersfield College (BC).

On Wednesday, June 12, 2024, Kern County Superior Court was the main location for a rally with farmworkers and local labor unions to support the law allowing farmers to vote on labor issues using an offsite card check system. This law is Assembly Bill 2183 Agricultural Labor Relations Voting Choice Act, and it empowered Kern farmworkers to gather and choose the United Farm Workers Union to represent them in any labor negotiations.

To bring Medi-Cal to more Kern residents several local organizations and health insurers came together to offer a free enrollment event. From 9 am to 2 pm, residents went to the Kern County Fair Grounds where they were greeted with friendly volunteers directing them where to go in Spanish and English. This event was indoors and included a resource fair. At the start of this calendar year, a few major changes were made to who can be eligible for Medi-Cal.

Since 2020, Christian Clegg has served as the City Manager of Bakersfield, overseeing daily operations and future budget planning. Under his leadership, the city has prioritized mitigating the impact of homelessness, collaborating with Kern County and other partners to develop housing programs and conduct encampment clean-ups.

At our state capitol on May 14 leaders met to discuss several bills authored by California Senator Henry Stern that would help families battle negative effects from cyberbullying. However SB 1444, Let Parents Choose Protection Act or Sammy’s Law was scrapped during voting. Only SB 1504 Cyberbullying Protection Act and SB 1283 Pupils: use of smartphones and social media remain eligible to become potential laws. SB 1504 was passed in the state senate floor and has moved to assembly on May 21.

Local organizations are sending a message with its first-ever Advancing Health Equity, Sexuality, and Gender Identity Healthcare Symposium. One major topic will be how best to hold city and county agencies accountable for collecting vital data according to the new law passed SB 957 regarding Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI). Register for this free event before June 7. The event is on Friday, June 14.

Two new 24-hour facilities opened on May 15, 2024, for adult and youth psychiatric inpatient services. The grand opening was hosted by Kern County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (KernBHRS), and future staff were attending to answer questions. Both buildings can provide beds to 16 individuals on a referral basis. The contractor Telecare manages the Adult Psychiatric Health Facility (PHF). Central Star Behavioral Health manages the youth building.
