It can be challenging to ask for help when as a society we often prioritize self-sufficiency above self-care. However, there can be serious downsides to not accepting help, particularly for mesothelioma survivors. Trying to do too much physically after a procedure or mesothelioma surgery can cause you harm. If you don’t follow your healthcare team’s recommendations to avoid driving or lifting heavy items, it can cause complications and a longer recovery time.

Most people with mesothelioma feel symptoms of anxiety from time to time. Studies show between 10% and 30% of cancer patients experience the frequency or intensity of anxiety symptoms to meet criteria for an anxiety disorder diagnosis such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder or post traumatic stress disorder. Those with more advanced types or stages of cancer and those whose treatments aren’t effective are at higher risk of experiencing symptoms of anxiety.

As a mental health counselor working in cancer care, I have helped many cancer patients figure out how to tackle difficult conversations. One of the most challenging conversations: How do I tell my children or grandchildren about our family member’s cancer diagnosis? Many older mesothelioma patients may be close to their grandchildren or are helping raise them. Some people diagnosed with mesothelioma at a younger age may be living with minors.

Mesothelioma caregivers, as well as the patients they’re caring for, are at increased risk of developing depression. Globally, the prevalence of depression among cancer caregivers is 42%. A recent study discussed the results of a large systematic review of thousands of studies of cancer caregivers. The results showed an increase in the incidence of depression among caregivers since the last study of its kind 5 years earlier. There are a variety of reasons for this increased risk.
